Lohri Festival
Jan 13, 2019
The festival of Lohri, which is celebrated by Punjab and other states of India, marks the end of winter season and is traditionally believed to welcome the sun to the northern hemisphere. Observed a night before Makar Sankranti, this occasion involves a Puja Parikrama around the bonfire with prasadam. Many people believe the day commemorates the passing of the winter solstice, while many others believe that it is a harvest festival.
The Festival starts with the lighting up a bonfire by the Hon'ble Chancellor Sir, Dr. Sandeep Bakshi, Executive Director, Dr. Preeti Bakshi, Director SIILAS, Prof. D.S. Bhatia and other dignitaries. It was attended and celebrated by all the faculty members, staff and students, with much enthusiasm.
SIILAS celebrated Lohri with great passion, lighting up a bonfire and feasting on traditional sweets like gajak and rewadi, along with peanuts and popcorn. And also students participated in Kite Flying Competition, The Competition was inaugurated by Hon'ble Chancellor sir Dr. Sandeep Bakshi with kite flying, as students were motivated and at the end prize distribution was done. Students were provided with a familiar environment and a chance to experience the fun of vibrant celebration of the festival. This year, the Lohri event gave the students a lot of enjoyments in a different manner as they dressed themselves up in Bhangra and Giddha costumes and danced on ethnic music.
