Prof Dr. Bimal Patel, Jaipur National University elected to the International Law Commission

Prof Bimal Patel, Vice Chancellor of Rashtriya Raksha University and Former Ph.D Scholar from Seedling School of Law and Governance, Jaipur National University, elected to the International Law Commission for 5 year term starting from 1st January, 2023

Professor Bimal Patel, Vice-Chancellor, Rashtriya Raksha University, Former Ph.D Scholar from Seedling School of Law and Governance, Jaipur National University and Member of National Security Advisory Board of India, has been elected to the International Law Commission for a five-year term starting January 1, 2023 in a hard-fought election at the United Nations.

Dr. Sandeep Bakshi, Chancellor of the Jaipur National University, expressed his happiness of the achievement of Prof (Dr) Bimal Patel. He said, “It is a big achievement and it is a proud moment for Jaipur National University family. This achievement of Prof Patel’s elevation in the International Law Commission would encourage the progressive development of international law and its codification in the coming future”.

Professor Bimal Patel from India topped the Asia-Pacific group with 163 votes in the UN General Assembly out of 192 members present and voting during the election to International Law Commission.

The Asia-Pacific group saw 11 very strong candidates contesting for 8 seats. The 11 candidates by nationality included candidates from India, Japan, China, the Republic of Korea, Thailand, Cyprus, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Mongolia, and Lebanon. India topped the Asia-Pacific group with 163 votes on the account of Bimal Patel, followed by 162 votes for Thailand, 154 votes for Japan, 145 votes for Vietnam, 142 votes for China, 140 votes for South Korea, 139 votes for Cyprus, and 123 votes for Mongolia.

Prof Patel is an esteemed educationalist, jurist and administrator and during his professional career of over three decades, he has served in various roles such as the Director at the Gujarat National Law University and member of the 21st Law Commission of India.

Prof Patel did his Ph.D In International Law and Governance from Seedling School of Law and Governance, Jaipur National University, Jaipur under the guidance of Prof (Dr) V.S. Mani, the Founding Director of Seedling School of Law and Governance, Jaipur National University. Patel was appointed director of GNLU in 2008. Under the leadership of Patel, GNLU has had steady growth. He is credited to have played a pioneering role and responsibility in creating a world-class campus of GNLU. He has been instrumental in starting many new courses and programs and has transformed the academic system of GNLU by adopting the Research-Based Teaching University curriculum. 

Prof Patel served the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the Hague between 1995 and 2009. Patel has researched on the jurisprudence of the International Court of Justice, ITLOS, ICTY, and ILOAT. He has published and edited several books, research papers/articles/surveys in leading academic and international law journals. He has experience in designing and implementing international and national development and research programs and projects and networking and coordination with governmental agencies, UN bodies, and academic/research institutions in various parts of the world.
