Mathematics is one of the most ancient sciences of the world and has wide applications in various fields of study and research. A degree of Mathematics provides a range of skills which enable one to enter into a wide range of careers, in the areas of research, design and development, actuarial sciences, mathematical modelling, management services, computing, finances and academics. Training in mathematics is also necessary for research in many areas of Computer Sciences, Social Sciences and Biology. The Department offers Masters in Mathematics for interested and motivated students who are willing to pursue higher studies in the field of Mathematics.

Industry Internship Programme

As per M.Sc. curriculum, students are required to undergo a six-month industry/ research internship programme, based on which they can submit the dissertation.

A master’s degree (M.Sc. Mathematics) is a postgraduate degree for students who want to become more skilled or specialized in a particular discipline tend to be more focused and allow students to develop the depth of their knowledge in a particular subject. Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space, and change. Mathematicians seek out patterns and formulate new conjectures which resolve the truth or falsity of conjectures by mathematical proofs. Mathematics is very important in the field of data science as concepts within mathematics aid in identifying patterns and assist in creating algorithms. The understanding of various notions of Statistics and Probability Theory are key for the implementation of such algorithms in data science.

The curriculum of M.Sc. Mathematics includes dissertation projects, assignments, analyzing a large amount of numerical data, MAT Lab, NST Lab ,seminars and complete course of CSIR NET Exam. MAT LAB may not be as user friendly as an application like Photoshop, however, being a general purpose programming language it provides many important advantages for forensic image processing. It ensures the image processing steps used are completely documented, and hence can be replicated. It also includes designing surveys and experiments. The evaluation of a student is done through an Internal Assessment and External Assessment. This Department organized time to time workshops with help of department of computer science. The dissertation project is an important part of M.Sc. Mathematics.

Direct Admission with Personal Interview and there is no entrance test.

Yes, it is compulsory to complete all the prescribed practical sessions because Numerical methods in NST Lab are mathematical methods that are used to approximate the solution of complicated problems so that the solution consists of only addition, subtraction and multiplication operations. MATLAB is a high-performance language for technical computing.

A master's degree in mathematics makes a specialized and skilled person in solving various mathematical problems. They have the ability of logical thinking and solving the problems in various alternative methods. As a career, you can do the PhD. and go for lectureships. With your M. Sc. degree you can find a job in school and parallel join some coaching classes. Even banks and financial institutions also prefer mathematics qualified personnel. If you like you can go for a chartered accountant course. If you are interested you can join DRDO, as a scientist and do further research under them.
