Albert Einstein rightly said….“Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.”As a part of their curriculum and a practical approach to the subjects of CPV, IPC, Cr.PC and Human Rights, the Seedling School of Law and Governance, Jaipur National University organised a visit to the Jaipur Central Jail for its students.
As many as 52 students of BALLB (Hons) and BBALLB (Hons) (VI semesters) along with the teachers Dr. Niharika Gaur and Ms.Surbhi Dubey of department, visited barracks at Ghat -Gate, Adarsh Nagar, Jaipur on 25th March 2019 and interacted with jail officials. The students were headed by Deputy Jailor named Mr. Wilson Sharma and SP Mr.Rakesh Mohan Sharma, who gave the whole insights of the jail system.
Initially before entering the premises of central jail, every student and faculties were checked. It was to ensure that no one carries mobile phones, jewellery or any accessory of that sort. Stamps were put on everyone’s hands. Faculties and the students were asked to write and sign in the register of the authority. A board displayed on the wall showed different kind of criminals present in the Central Jail, Jaipur.
The officials in Jail took the faculties and the students to the prison cells where the inhabitants are kept. There were different dress codes for the different kinds of prisoners. For instance, for convicted ones’, the dress code was white kurta pyjama and a Nehru topi and for the under trials, the dress code was civil dress. There was open place for the purpose of bathing and washing clothes.
The faculties and the students were taken to the kitchen area. The kitchen was quite clean and hygienic. In food, the prisoners were given two vegetables, raita, rice and chapatti. Some of the prisoners were assigned the duty of preparing the food for all inmates. The food has to be checked and tasted by the authority and then only the food is served for all the prisoners.
According to the information provided by the Jail Authorities, there were around 1600 prisoners and around 300 staff members to govern them.
Later, the jail authorities explained about the concepts of Parole.
With this the visit came to an end and the students bid adios to the jail authorities. The visit to Jail proved to be a great experience as it not only changed the perspective of an actual jail but also enlightened the students about the daily routine of the prisoners living there.
