B.Sc. (Hons.) - Chemistry

School of Life & Basic Sciences

Students of B.Sc. (Hons) Chemistry will become aware of the important aspects of chemical terminology, nomenclature, convention and units. They would be empowered with principles of thermodynamics and kinetics related to chemistry and apply the principles and procedures used in chemical analysis and characterization. As professionals, they can explore avenues through knowledge and adherence to chemical safety legislation. They would be able to operate laboratory procedures in synthetic and analytical chemistry, evaluate experimental data through testing hypotheses, define problems and create innovative and practical solutions. The course would prepare the students for a variety of possible careers in chemistry laboratories and in chemistry-related fields like forensics or pharmaceuticals. It also provides excellent preparation for pre-professional programmes in medicine, dentistry, medical technology, etc.

Applying for Admissions 2021

Chemistry is the Central Science. All aspects of technical development require people with expertise in chemistry. A basic chemical education is required of doctors, dentists, engineers, agriculturalists, foresters, factory managers, etc. Thus, there is a continuing need for chemistry teachers in the region. In addition, there is an increasing need for graduates with some chemistry background for work in the industry as quality control staff, production managers and in a range of government and private research laboratories, e.g. mineral exploration, environmental pollution monitoring, agriculture. The contribution of chemistry graduates to regional development is considerable.

  • B.Sc Chemistry is a three year undergraduate which gives students an in-depth knowledge of the chemical sciences. A student who has completed a B.Sc programme in Chemistry can work in various industries such as food products, pharmaceuticals, drugs manufacturing industries, etc.
  • Further, if a candidate wants to pursue higher studies, an M.Sc programme with some specialization in some specific field will help in gaining more advanced technical knowledge and practical skills. There are many post graduate diploma programmes available for a chemistry graduate. i.e, Post Graduate Diploma in Chemical Technology, Post Graduate Diploma in Analytical Chemistry, etc.
  • After M.Sc programme he/she can also go for PhD for any specialization.
  • After completion of B.Sc., candidate can pursue in Master of Science in Chemistry,Master of Science in Physical & Materials Chemistry, Master of Science in Analytical Chemistry, Master of Science in Drug Chemistry, Master of Science in Organic Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Post Graduate Diploma in Analytical Chemistry (PGDAC).

  • B.Sc (Hons) is generally a three-year degree program which develops advanced theoretical and research skills. B.Sc (general) or simply "B.Sc" is a three-year undergraduate academic degree, designed to provide the students with foundation knowledge possible for a science-based career.
  • It helps in building an advanced professional or academic career It is an appropriate course for students who wish to pursue Master of Science (M.Sc) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
  • This program facilitates students who wish to pursue an independent research project in an area of interest under the supervision of an academic staff member This program facilitates a large range of career possibilities. It provides a broad foundation in the sciences, with a special focus on multidisciplinary
  • The B.Sc (hons) degree is more beneficial than a B.Sc degree. A student with a B.Sc (hons) degree, is normally given preference over a student with a B.Sc (general) degree.
