Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field that uses the applications of computational techniques to analyse the information associated with biomolecules on a large-scale. It is a firmly established discipline in computational Biology, and encompasses a wide range of subject areas from Structural Biology and Genomics to Gene Expression Studies, Systems Biology, Cheminformatics & Drug Designing, Phylogenetics, Biostatistics, etc. The scope of bioinformatics is never ending with its association of biological knowledge and computational power, algorithms and tools to alter and analyse large-scale data. B.Sc. (Hons.) Bioinformatics is a three-year programme. In the first year, basic knowledge of science and computers are taught for giving the knowledge of fundamentals of the subjects. In the second and third year, specialized subjects related to Bioinformatics are taught.

Industry Internship Programme

The students undergo a training programme in the Department of Bioinformatics. This training will ensure that students demonstrate and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as management competencies in applied, experiential settings.  

Industry Internship programme

As per M.Sc. curriculum, students are required to undergo a six-month industry/ research internship programme, based on which they can submit the dissertation.

Bioinformatics is very interesting and demanding now a days. It is a very interesting subject for those who want to know about the inter-relationship between medical science  and human organs.

It also deals with the important areas of Biology such as: Molecular Biology (Next generation sequencing, Pharmacogenomics: Precise medicine, Drug development processes and Gene expression study), Agriculture (Agriinformatics), Health and medical sciences (Health informatics, Clinical Informatics and Medical informatics).

Scope of Bio-informatics is increasing day by day as the need of medical science is increasing rapidly. It is one of the highly paid sectors in abroad countries. In India, it is also very much growing sector so, that scholars can make their career here in India also.

A person who practices Bioinformatics and has studied bioinformatics course is generally called as Bioinformatics Scientist or Bioinformatics Specialist. Biological processes are becoming complex as the world advances, and it is nearly impossible to manage and interpret such data.

A Bioinformatics Scientist studies structure and alignment of datasets such as proteomics, raw microarray, and genomic sequence data. They spend a lot of time inside a bioinformatics laboratory with computers and microscopes. It is their job to conduct experiments and collect data for future interpretations. Other works of a Bioinformatics Scientist may include gene finding, sequence alignment, genome assembly, protein-protein interactions, nucleotide and amino acid alignment, protein folding, alignment of DNA, analyse next gene of a data sequence etc.

Bioinformatics offers multiple career options and which career to choose is all up to the scientist. They make higher than the average salary because of the vast demand for Bioinformatics Scientists. Many institutes in India and abroad offer teaching and research positions for Bioinformatics specialists. Bioinformatics can work in various industries such as:

  • Medical science,
  • Pharmaceutical,
  • Agricultural and private or government sectors.
  • Web developer: Database Programmer.
  • Knowledge processing organization: Data scientist, Research scientist. Recently, Bioinformatics has spread its branched into oncology to detect causal mutations in cancer disease. Usually, computer software is built by external agencies, and if capable, Bioinformatics Scientists can find a career in that field of Data Sciences also.

12th passed students with the science subject (Physics/ chemistry/ Biology/ Mathmatics) can pursue B.Sc. In Bioinformatics

There are a lot of Bioinformatics jobs in the field of Data Science, Research Scientist, KPO’s, Web Developer/ Bioinformatics Software development , Machine learning and Artificial Intelligence . There are also plenty of opportunities at startups and large companies, in fields from Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals to Agriculture.

Yes, Students need to have programming skills such as: R, PERL, Python and JAVA, if they are working in IT sector and Software Development.

Even if students are just inclined to the biological aspect of it, still students would need some amount of programming like C, C++, DBMS. XML and PERL to deal with the biological data.

Scope after B. Sc.: As a B. Sc. Bioinformatics degree holder students have two Options:

  • Go for Higher Studies:
    • M. Sc
    • Go for an MBA and enter the world of Business Development, Marketing & Sales. (You can choose Bioinformatics with MBA in JNU, Jaipur).
  • For Abroad: IELTS/GRE/TOEFL

If students are interested in studying mathematics, statistics, computers and biology; then it’s worth it. It’s a new booming field, especially with more data being churned out by wet-lab researchers there is/will be a need of experienced Bioinformaticians to make sense of the data.

Placement opportunities are available in following Biotechnology industries / IT Companies as intern, trainee, QC and QA analyst, and junior manager, Software Developer/Web devloper, Data Analyst . Further progress in company depends on performance.
