The undergraduate Physiotherapy program is designed with the goal to create a Physiotherapist possessing ability to assess, plan and implement rehabilitative programs that improve or restore human motor functions, maximize movement ability, relieve pain syndromes, and treat or prevent physical challenges associated with injuries, diseases and other impairments. They apply a broad range of physical therapies and techniques such as movement, ultrasound, heating, laser and other techniques. They may develop and implement programmes for screening and prevention of common physical ailments and disorders. The BPT program typically covers a wide range of clinical exposure in physical therapy, including musculoskeletal physiotherapy, neurological physiotherapy, sports physiotherapy, pediatric physiotherapy, gynecological physiotherapy, and cardio respiratory physiotherapy.

Objectives:

  • To equip students with a strong foundation of knowledge in anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the human body.
  • To develop students' clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills to effectively assess, diagnose, and treat patients with various conditions.
  • To provide students with hands-on training and practical experience in various areas of physiotherapy, such as orthopedics, neurology, pediatrics, sports medicine, and cardio-respiratory physiotherapy.
  • To prepare students to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals in interdisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive care to patients.
  • To develop students' communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • To instill in students a strong sense of professionalism, ethics, and social responsibility in their practice.

Industry Internship Programme

BPT students have to complete a 6-month rotatory internship in a multispecialty hospital. The students are allowed to pursue the entire internship programme from JNU Hospital.

  • The students take up research projects in the final semester of the course based on the specified specialization of Physiotherapy i.e. Community based Rehabilitation, Orthopaedic Rehabilitation, Sports Rehabilitation, Neurological Rehabilitation, Cardiac Rehabilitation and Manual Therapy.

Applying for Admissions 2022-23

Physiotherapy means Physiotherapeutic system of medicine which includes examination, diagnosis, treatment, advice and instruction to any person in connection with the movement dysfunction, bodily malfunction, physical disorder, disability, healing and pain from trauma and disease?physical and mental conditions?using physical agents including exercise, mobilization, manipulation, mechanical and electrotherapy devices.

A professionally trained person who administers physiotherapy treatment is known as Physiotherapist. If you consider doctors as gods in human form, then maybe you can call physiotherapists as your guardian angels.

A Physiotherapists job involves helping to recover and / or rehabilitate from a state of having been incapacitated. He/she has the responsibility to help restore the patients body to its optimal functioning level.

Tasks Involved are:

  • Prescribe remedial exercises
  • Muscle strength evaluation and quantification
  • Physical treatment by electrotherapy modalities like short-wave diathermy, microwave diathermy, ultrasonic therapy, contrast bath, cryo-therapy, hydro collator, whirlpool therapy, trans-electric muscle stimulation, infra-red therapy, ultraviolet therapy and different therapeutic exercises by automated machines.
  • Evaluate sitting, standing balance in neurologically affected patients.
  • Apply manual therapy, mobilization, manipulation of soft tissue techniques etc. Progress through wheelchair and gait training with or without ambulatory aids. Research in relevant areas.
  • Aid in-home evaluation to make the environment barrier free and accessible. Improving the status of patients with cardiopulmonary dysfunction.
  • Physiotherapists treat the reactions and responses of the body to injury, disease or abnormalities in development. They are also key health professionals in the prevention of injury.

A Physiotherapist is a very important member of the health care team where his responsibility is to rehabilitate the patient back to normal without medicines by exercise, manual therapy, rehabilitation techniques and physical activity.

After BPT, a student can pursue higher education both in India and abroad and can pursue specialization in the field of physiotherapy. Further, they are also eligible for the programs like hospital administration, business management, public health management and various M.Sc programs. After Bachelor of Physiotherapy, a student has also the option to work as clinical physiotherapist with hospitals/clinics.

The normal pay package for a Physiotherapist working in a hospital, i.e., in a physiotherapy department starts with minimum Rs. 3-4 lakhs per annum. As experience increases, remuneration increases depending on the work output and the type of organization he / she is working in.

After completing 4 years of BPT, six months of compulsory internship is done in a multi-specialty hospital (minimum 100 bedded) with rotating duties in different specialties of the hospital like medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, cardiac, neurology etc.

In BPT degree, the students will be required to study basic medical subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Bio-chemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, Orthopedics, Surgery, Neurology, Cardiothoracic Diseases and Surgery, Psychiatry and then core physiotherapy subjects such as Exercise therapy, Electrotherapy, Manual therapy, Prosthetics Orthotics, Obstetrics Gynecology, Orthopedic Physiotherapy, Neuro- Physiotherapy, Sports Physiotherapy, Cardio-Physiotherapy, Community Physiotherapy, General Physiotherapy, Research Methodology Biostatistics, Organization and Administration and Research project to develop an insight into the management and treatment of conditions.

After passing BPT, a student can pursue MPT in different specialized branches like ? Orthopedics, Neurology, Sports Medicine, Cardiopulmonary to enhance interest areas and skills. After Masters, student can also pursue their PhD in the field of physiotherapy.

A Physiotherapist can do research to develop new techniques and design protocols of rehabilitation for various health disorders. As physiotherapy is an upcoming field, stronger roots of profession can develop only if evidence based practice is incorporated in clinical practice.

  • BPT program was started in 2016 in JNU and this year shall be 5th year.

He/she has passed the Higher Secondary (10+2) or equivalent examination recognized by any Indian University or a duly constituted board with pass marks (50%)in physics, chemistry and biology(botany & zoology), mathematics.(i.e ?Physics, chemistry and biology as mandates requirements).

Candidates who have studied abroad and have passed the equivalent qualification as determined by the Association of Indian Universities will form the guideline to determine the eligibility and must have passed in the subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English up to 12th Standard level.

Candidates who have passed the Senior Secondary school Examination of National Open School with a minimum of 5 subjects with any of the following group subjects.

Physiotherapy is delivered in a variety of settings which allow it to achieve its purpose.
