Civil engineering is one of the oldest branches of engineering which is required to fulfil the necessity of mankind for shelter. Some civil engineering marvels are still present as landmark of history in front of us. It was the only engineering branch which developed even before man knew about science. Since stone age and civil engineering played most important role in human evolution. In this competitive world it is essential to know what this career entails before enrolling for the study program. Civil engineers are responsible for development, planning, design, construction, maintenance, and/or operation of every construction as well as all the basic utilities are responsibility of civil engineers. In short civil engineer provides foundation to other branches of  engineering to do their work. There are various career opportunities in the public and private sector, from local authorities to government departments and from consulting firms to construction firms. In past few years Indian civil engineers are getting a lot of career opportunities in gulf countries and as well as large amount of government jobs opening have been seen in last decade due to rapid increase in infrastructure in India.   

Learning Perspective of Civil Engineering: During the four years of engineering, civil engineering students deal with fundamental subjects such as design, development, planning, maintenance and construction of every permanent structure such as irrigation systems ,bridges ,dams, harbors, canals, railways, airports, road & streets, water distribution system, sewage system and all the buildings, whether used as commercially or residentially in an economic and environment friendly manner. During engineering, university provides hands-on practice in various modern cutting edge laboratories. Students will enhance not only in hardware skills, also improvement in software sections (AUTO CADD, MS project etc.) through seminars and project in the last semester.

Laboratories

The department has well-equipped and modern facilities for teaching and research. The Civil Engineering department has the following labs:

  • Computer laboratories with AUTO CADD software

Industrial Visits

The department organizes frequent industrial and construction site visits to enhance the practical knowledge of the core areas among the students. These visits include:

  • Sewage treatment plants
  • Water treatment Plants
  • Survey camps in remote areas.
  • Water Works (PHED)
  • Cement Industries
  • Software related to stream Workshops
  • Various construction site visits.
  • Leading Manufacturing Companies

Student Projects

An Engineering project provides the students the opportunity to work in multi-disciplinary teams to pursue an engineering idea from conception to design. Some remarkable projects successfully designed at the department of Civil Engineering by JNU students include:

  • Solar power for remote areas.
  • Translucent concrete.
  • Fibre reinforced concrete by using waste polythene pieces.
  • Advance water harvesting system
  • Model of double deck arch type bridge.
  • Model for earthquake resistant building by base isolation.
  • Working Model of water distribution system of a colony
  • Self-healing bituminous road.
  • Bitumen made by using burnt waste plastic.
  • Working Model of sewage treatment plant.
  • Model of cable suspension bridge.

    Student has to score 40% marks in each theory paper in final exam and 50% in sessional marks

    NOTE:-

    1.      For passing in every subject student have to score at least 40% marks in theory and 50% marks in practical.

    2.      Student has to attend 75% of the theory and practical class to appear for the Mid-Term and final semester examinations.

    Student has to select one of the elective subjects from the list of Elective-I and Elective-II
