Sociology is an integral component of the Social Sciences which enhances the understanding of social reality. By doing this, it ensures greater efficiency and effectiveness in multiple fields. MA in Sociology programme provides opportunity for the students to study a range of topics. The course enables the students to encourage critical-thinking skills, design and conduct their research projects, identify key sociological issues and engage effectively with the wider academic community. The key idea underlying the this programme is to interrogate the political, economic and social dimensions of change in transitional societies, using Ireland as a key point of reference. The programme stimulates students to think about the role that sociological analysis can play in helping to advance solutions to the current social and economic challenges. The course gives equal importance to classical and contemporary theories on the one hand and a number of special fields of empirical Sociological studies on the other. This programme balances papers which offer a strong grounding in theory and methods with others which impart skills. These skills are enhanced through Workshops, Seminars, Panel Discussions, Guest Lectures and Field Visits that are organized and conducted for and by the students.
